DES MOINES, Iowa — Hundreds of families in central Iowa have been provided with affordable housing thanks to the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity.

Friday, the non-profit took time to celebrate the milestone while they dedicated their 400th home, built on Des Moines’ east side, to a family of four.

Greater Des Moines Habitat has been building homes for the past 35 years.

Friday, the organization’s international CEO Jonathan Reckford hopped on the Zoom celebration to share his message of thanks to all the volunteers who helped make these homes possible.

“We know how a decent home can change a family’s trajectory and that investments in healthy, secure housing have greater-than-expected benefits, creating jobs, generating incomes and helping alleviate the overcrowding that makes communities more vulnerable to threats such as COVID-19,” Reckford said.

Habitat homes are sold with affordable mortgages to qualified, low-income families.

Greater Des Moines Habitat has built homes in 35 different neighborhoods around central Iowa.

They hope to finish their 500th home in the next three years.
