How to Calculate Plywood Landed Cost

Landed cost is the total cost of getting plywood from the factory to your warehouse. It includes the product price (FOB), shipping, insurance, import duties, customs fees, and local delivery charges. Understanding your true landed cost is critical for pricing competitively in the US, Canadian, European, or any market.

Landed Cost Formula

Landed Cost = FOB + Ocean Freight + Insurance + Import Duty + Customs Clearance + Local Charges

  • FOB (Free On Board): The price you pay the supplier at the origin port. Can be quoted per CBM or per piece.
  • CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight): FOB + Freight + Insurance. Most customs offices use CIF as the base for duty calculation.
  • Import Duty: A percentage of CIF value. Rates vary by product (HTS code), country of origin, and trade agreements. For plywood (HTS 4412), US rates range from 0% to 8%+ depending on species and origin.
  • Local Charges: Drayage (trucking from port), customs broker fees, port terminal handling charges (THC), chassis fees, and warehouse unloading.

Sales Pricing & Local Currency

After calculating landed cost, add your sales margin (typically 15–30% for plywood distribution) to arrive at your selling price. Use the local currency converter to see prices in your market's currency with a custom FX rate. Apply VAT, GST, or Sales Tax as required by your market.

Market Competitiveness

Enter market prices (competitor or benchmark prices) to instantly see how your landed + margin price compares. If your price is below market, you have room for margin improvement. If above, consider negotiating FOB or reducing logistics costs.

Tips for Plywood Importers

  • Always calculate landed cost per CBM to compare suppliers fairly — even if they quote per piece.
  • Don't forget anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties that may apply to specific countries.
  • Container utilization affects your freight cost per CBM. A full 40HC loads ~28 CBM of plywood.
  • Current US tariff landscape includes a 10% base tariff on most imports (Section 122), plus additional rates for specific origins.

Preguntas Frecuentes
