North American lumber yards and distributors sell plywood using imperial dimensions — feet, inches, and fractions. Why 18 mm = “3/4 inch” (But Isn't Really)

The most common plywood thickness from Asia is 18 mm. In the US market, this is universally sold as 3/4" plywood. However, true 3/4" equals 19.05 mm. The exact fractional equivalent is 23/32". This “nominal vs. actual” sizing is standard practice and buyers should be aware of the difference when specifying tolerances for precision applications like cabinetry.

Common Sheet Size Conversions

The global standard plywood sheet is 1220 × 2440 mm, corresponding to 4' × 8'. European manufacturers often produce 1250 × 2500 mm sheets. Indian and SE Asian markets also commonly use 915 × 1830 mm (3' × 6') panels.

Tips for Importers

• Always specify in mm: When ordering from Asian factories, use exact millimeter dimensions to avoid confusion.
• Confirm tolerances: Standard manufacturing tolerance is ±0.5 mm for thickness and ±2 mm for length/width.
• Document both units: On invoices and packing lists, include both mm and equivalent imperial sizes.
