Quick Answers

Is any plywood truly fireproof?
No. Wood is a fuel, so no plywood is fireproof. The accurate term is fire-retardant-treated (FRT) plywood, which is chemically treated to char slowly and resist flame spread. It buys time and slows a fire; it does not make the panel unable to burn.
Is fire-rated plywood the same as fire-retardant plywood?
They describe different things. Fire-retardant refers to the chemical treatment (FRT). Fire-rated refers to a tested result, such as ASTM E84 Class A, B or C, BS 476, or a Euroclass. A panel is fire-rated because it passed a recognized test, and that almost always means it was fire-retardant-treated first.
What does ASTM E84 Class A mean?
ASTM E84 measures how fast flame spreads across a surface and reports a Flame Spread Index (FSI). Class A is an FSI of 25 or lower, the level used where treated wood substitutes for noncombustible materials. Class B is 26 to 75 and Class C is 76 to 200.
Can you cut, sand, or paint FRT plywood?
You can crosscut and drill FRT plywood because the treatment runs through the panel. You can paint or seal it like ordinary plywood. Avoid deep face sanding, which can thin the treated layer that controls surface flame spread. Light scuff-sanding for paint adhesion is fine.
Does Vinawood sell fire-retardant (FRT) plywood?
No. Vinawood manufactures film-faced, marine, HDO, MDO and commercial plywood, not chemically fire-retardant-treated panels. For a rated application, source FRT from a certified treater with the matching test documentation. This article is buyer education, not a product pitch.
