Quick Answers

Why is MDF not recommended for outdoor use?
MDF fibres swell irreversibly when they absorb moisture, and the swelling does not reverse when the panel dries. Outdoors it deforms and breaks down within a season. Even moisture-resistant MR-MDF is rated only for damp interior air such as bathrooms and kitchens, not rain. For exterior painted panels, MDO plywood is the correct substrate.
Is MDO plywood better than MDF for cabinets?
It depends on the room. For interior, climate-controlled cabinet doors with a sprayed finish, MDF wins on smoothness, cost, and a grain-free painted face. For humid-area cabinetry such as bathroom vanities, MDO or plywood is the safer choice because MDF fails on a water leak. Match the substrate to the moisture exposure.
Can MDO plywood be painted?
Yes. MDO (medium-density overlay) is a paint-grade panel by design: the resin-impregnated kraft-paper overlay hides the plywood grain and holds a durable painted finish, which is why it is used for exterior signage, soffits, and fascias. Seal the cut edges before painting so moisture cannot enter the plywood core.
Can MDO plywood get wet?
MDO is water-resistant, not waterproof. The plywood core uses WBP adhesive and the overlay sheds weather once primed and painted, so it tolerates outdoor exposure for years. The vulnerable point is any unsealed cut edge, which will soak water until the plywood delaminates, so edge sealing with primer or polyurethane is essential.
