Matte Concrete Surface Plywood

MDO (Medium Density Overlay) plywood produces a smooth matte concrete finish. The fiber-based overlay transfers a subtle flat texture to the concrete surface, resulting in a non-reflective, uniform finish suitable for interior structural elements and concealed concrete work.

Generally, yes. MDO plywood panels cost less than film faced or HDO alternatives because the medium-density fiber overlay is less expensive to produce than phenolic film or high-density resin overlays. However, MDO offers fewer reuse cycles (up to 5 to 15) compared to glossy-surface panels (up to 20 to 30+), so cost-per-use should be calculated for your specific project.

MDO formwork plywood can be used for exposed concrete, but the result will be a flat, matte surface rather than a glossy, reflective one. This finish is often preferred for interior walls, soffits, and structural elements where a softer appearance is desired. For high-end architectural exposed concrete, glossy film-faced or HDO panels are the better choice.

Clean panels immediately after stripping using a plastic scraper — never metal tools that can damage the overlay. Apply a thin coat of form release agent before every pour. Seal cut edges with waterproof paint. Store panels flat on level bearers under cover. With proper care, MDO formwork panels deliver up to 5 to 15 reuse cycles.
