What does HDO plywood mean?
HDO stands for high density overlay. It is a plywood panel with a resin-impregnated fibre overlay hot-pressed onto one or both faces, producing a hard, dense, non-absorbent surface built for repeated concrete forming. The overlay is bonded in the press as part of the panel build, not applied as a coating afterwards, which is why it survives being scraped and re-oiled across many pour cycles.
What is the difference between HDO and MDO plywood?
Both carry a resin overlay; the difference is density and resin content. An HDO overlay is harder and more closed, so it casts a glossy, near-mirror concrete face and resists abrasion better. An MDO overlay is softer and more absorbent, casting a matte face and accepting paint. Choose HDO when the concrete should come out glossy and MDO when it should come out matte. Note that MDO covers two different products: APA-domestic kraft-paper MDO tuned for paint adhesion, and matte phenolic surface film MDO made for concrete forming.
How many times can HDO plywood be reused?
Cycle counts depend on the overlay grade and, more than anything, on site handling. Vinawood rates HDO Basic at up to 10 reuse cycles and HDO Premium and Premium HD at up to 20. Those are maximums, not guarantees: they assume release agent applied thinly before every pour, cleaning while residue is still soft, sealed cut edges, and flat storage off the ground under cover. Unsealed edges are the single most common reason a panel retires early.

HDO is generally not a lumber-yard product in North America.
