What is fair-faced concrete?
Fair-faced concrete is as-cast architectural concrete left exposed with no render or paint. The formed surface is the finish on facades, soffits, feature walls, and exposed columns, so the visual class in the project spec sets how tight voids, colour, and joints must be.
How do you achieve a fair-faced concrete finish?
A clean as-cast finish is a system result, not a single product. Mix design, the form face and joints, and release agent plus placement and curing all share the outcome. The plywood only controls one of those three levers, so a mill cannot promise a fair-face result from the panel alone.
Does the plywood form face affect the concrete finish?
Yes. The form face acts like a mirror: glossy phenolic film prints a shinier cast, matte phenolic surface film prints a calmer non-reflective face, and a closed polypropylene face stays non-absorbent across many pours when the face stays intact. Tight joints and sealed edges matter as much as the face chemistry.
What causes blemishes on fair-faced concrete?
Most marks trace to placement and release practice rather than a fresh panel face. Blowholes often come from thick release agent or vibration issues; colour blotches from uneven oil or curing drift; dark joint lines from grout loss at gaps or soft bracing. Swap the sheet if the face is worn; fix the pour if voids sit in the middle of a fresh face.
Which Vinawood plywood is best for fair-faced concrete?
For finish-critical repeat-use work, P-Form's polypropylene face is often the cleanest even cast, rated up to 35 reuses with site care. MatteFace (MTF) covers matte cast faces up to 15; phenolic Class 3 on Vinawood film-faced stock is Pro Form, Pro Form Lite, and HDO only. Form Extra is Superior Glue MUF on EN 636-2, not Class 3, even when the face film looks the same as Form Basic.
When should you choose MatteFace instead of a glossy film face?
Choose MatteFace when the elevation needs a flatter, less reflective as-cast look across a large facade. Buyers often search for MatteFace as MDO formwork plywood; keep it in the formwork conversation and never treat it as a duty story. Pair either face with a thin even release coat and keep the newest panels on the visible pours.
