What is phenolic plywood?
Phenolic plywood is a wood-based panel whose surface film, core adhesive, or both use phenol-formaldehyde resin. Phenolic resin is a single-component thermoset that cures irreversibly under heat and pressure, typically at 120-150 °C. It is not a two-component system and it is not an epoxy. The construction product is phenolic-faced plywood, a veneer-core panel with phenolic-impregnated paper film on one or both faces.
Is phenolic board waterproof?
No wood-based panel is waterproof. The accurate framing is bond class. A phenolic face film is highly water-resistant and resists cement alkalinity, and a phenol-formaldehyde core bond at EN 636-3 passes the boil test in EN 314-2 without delaminating. Neither protects a cut edge, which is bare veneer and end grain. Edge swelling and delamination almost always begin at an unsealed site cut, so resealing after every cut matters more than any claim made about the face.
What is the difference between phenolic film and phenolic glue?
They are two separate resin systems in the same panel. The face film is the phenolic-impregnated paper on the outside. The core bond is the adhesive holding the veneer plies together. A panel can carry a phenolic face film over a melamine-urea-formaldehyde core bond and be sold, correctly, as phenolic-faced without being phenolic-bonded. EN 636 classifies the core bond: EN 636-2 for MUF, EN 636-3 for phenol-formaldehyde. Vinawood Pro Form and the HDO range are phenolic on both counts.
Why is phenolic plywood so expensive?
Phenol-formaldehyde resin costs considerably more per kilogram than the urea-formaldehyde used in interior plywood, and the face film adds a second resin-loaded material. A phenolic bond also needs longer press cycles at higher temperature, which reduces panels per press per shift, and film lamination is a separate pressing operation on its own line. Tighter veneer selection for a panel expected to survive twenty pours costs yield as well. Judged per pour rather than per sheet, the higher-grade panel is usually the cheaper one.
What is phenolic plywood used for?
By volume the dominant use is concrete formwork: wall and column forms, slab tables, beam boxes and precast moulds. It is also specified for truck and trailer flooring, scaffold decking and industrial platforms, and marine or transport panelling. A separate retail market uses small-format Baltic-birch phenolic panels for router tables, CNC spoilboards and workshop jigs. Those are not the same product as a container-scale formwork panel.
How many times can phenolic plywood be reused?
Reuse values are maximums under good site practice, not guarantees. Vinawood Pro Form is rated for up to 20 pours, Form Extra up to 15, Form Basic up to 10. What a panel actually achieves depends mostly on site handling: sealing every cut edge, using a proper release agent applied thin rather than diesel or waste oil, stripping with timber or plastic wedges rather than steel bars, keeping the poker vibrator off the panel face, and storing panels on bearers under cover with faces together.
