What is laminated veneer lumber (LVL)?
LVL is an engineered structural member made from thin, rotary-peeled wood veneers laid up with the grain all running the same direction and bonded with a phenol-formaldehyde exterior glue line. Keeping the veneers parallel gives a straight, high-capacity beam used for headers, rafters, rim board, and formwork bearers. It sits in the structural composite lumber family alongside LSL and PSL.
What is the difference between LVL and glulam?
Both are engineered beams, but the make-up differs. LVL is built from thin veneers (about 3 mm) laid up parallel, giving a dense, uniform member usually hidden in the structure. Glulam is built from solid sawn timber laminations glued face to face, keeping a natural timber appearance that suits exposed and curved architectural spans. Pick LVL for concealed high-capacity members, glulam where the beam is seen.
What is the difference between LVL and regular lumber?
Regular sawn lumber is a single piece of wood, so its knots and grain deviation scatter its strength and can cause bowing. LVL is manufactured from graded veneers with staggered end joints, which removes most of that variation and delivers predictable design values and a straighter member. That predictability is the main reason a specifier chooses LVL over a sawn beam for the same span.
Is LVL stronger than solid timber?
For its section, LVL generally offers higher and more predictable structural capacity than solid sawn timber, because the veneers are graded and the defects are dispersed rather than concentrated at a knot. What matters on a drawing is the published design values for bending, shear, and stiffness under EN 14374 or ASTM D5456, which an engineer sizes the member against, not a generic strength claim.
Will LVL rot or warp?
LVL is dimensionally stable and its phenolic glue line is water-resistant, but it is not waterproof and it is still a wood product. Left in standing water or stored flat in the wet, a member can swell or warp, which usually traces back to site handling rather than a manufacturing fault. Keep it off the ground and under cover, seal cut ends and edges, and coat any member exposed to weather.
