Plywood is stronger in most directions because of its cross-grain veneer construction. At the same thickness, plywood typically resists deflection and supports loads better than plyboard, especially across spans over 600 mm. Plyboard is lighter and adequate for cabinet box construction in dry conditions, but plywood is the safer choice for shelves, structural panels, and any application carrying significant load.

Plyboard is typically cheaper than premium marine or WBP-bonded plywood at the same thickness, but more expensive than ordinary interior plywood. In the 2026 PH retail market, an 18 mm plyboard sheet runs roughly ₱1,200–₱1,800, sitting between ordinary plywood (~₱730–₱1,110) and marine plywood (~₱1,300–₱1,700).

It can, but it is not recommended for kitchen base cabinets near sinks or dishwashers because the softwood-strip core swells if water reaches it through cut edges or joints. For dry-zone wall cabinets and pantry cabinets, plyboard works. For base cabinets, sink cabinets, and any cabinet exposed to leak risk, WBP-bonded plywood is the safer specification.

WBP-bonded plyboard exists but is rare in PH retail. For waterproof or sustained-humidity applications, WBP-bonded plywood (marine grade or formwork grade) is the right specification.

For most Philippine cabinet applications, WBP-bonded plywood is the more versatile choice — it handles kitchen and bathroom moisture, takes screws reliably across the panel thickness, and lasts longer in humid conditions. For dry-zone interior wardrobes and bookshelves where weight reduction is helpful and moisture is not a factor, plyboard delivers acceptable performance at lower cost.
