Search calls it HDF plywood. The board is usually high-density fiberboard — pressed fiber, not cross-banded veneer. That naming mix-up is why we get RFQs asking for "HDF plywood" when the buyer wants either a paint-ready interior board or real structural plywood. Pick the job first.
What is HDF plywood?
HDF is wood fiber compressed under heat and pressure into a dense, smooth board. Denser than MDF. Smoother face for paint and veneer. Better light-humidity behaviour than untreated MDF. Still not a water-resistant exterior panel, and not marine plywood.

What are the disadvantages of HDF?
Furniture, cabinetry, doors, wall paneling, some flooring underlays — those are the usual fits. The downsides:
- Prolonged wet exposure still swells and softens the board
- Heavy to handle on large pieces
- Edges chip when tooling is dull
- Costs more than MDF when you do not need the face
I ask the same question every time: do you need the finish quality, or just thickness? Half the jobs should stay on MDF or real plywood.
Which is better, HDF or HDHMR?
HDHMR when humidity is the design load — kitchens, baths, damp corridors. Standard HDF for dry living spaces. Same dense idea; different moisture chemistry.

Is HDF better than MDF?
Usually denser, stronger, smoother. Holds flatter under interior load. MDF stays lighter, cheaper, easier to machine. Pay for HDF when the face earns it.
HDF vs marine plywood
Fiberboard vs cross-banded WBP phenolic plywood. HDF = smooth indoor face. Marine = wet service (boats, docks, exterior wet). Do not swap them on a wet RFQ.

Which is stronger, HDF or plywood?
Cross-banded plywood wins on bend and span. Sheathing, formwork, decks stay plywood jobs. HDF feels stout next to MDF; it is still not a structural plywood substitute.

How long does HDF last?
Dry indoor furniture and cabinetry: often 10–20 years. Wet rooms, poor edge seal, heavy impact: much less. Keep it dry.
