What film faced plywood is on a pour programme
Three layers make the sandwich that arrives on site. A cross-laminated hardwood plywood core is glued with water-resistant WBP adhesive at every glue line. A phenolic-resin film on kraft paper is pressed onto both faces under heat so the dark brown gloss and concrete-release behaviour are locked in. Sealed edges — painted or banded — keep cut ends from drinking water between pours. Once the press cycle finishes, film and core act as one panel rather than a sheet with a coating that peels away under alkaline concrete.
The film itself is thin. It gives the sealed pour face and weather resistance on the surface while the plywood stack resists lateral pressure on walls and decking. That split matters on the RFQ: writing only "phenolic plywood" without naming face film versus glue line leaves the mill guessing which product you actually want.
Use film faced plywood when wall, slab, column, or beam formwork has to return for another cycle, or when the architect expects fair-face concrete and the cost-per-pour number has to survive past roughly eight pours. Lost or sacrificial forms that stay cast in can run a lighter film and a lower bond class because they see one pour. Skip this class for painted exterior trim or signage programmes, and skip it for one-off lifts where a yard sheet dies after a single pour.
Where film faced plywood shows up on commercial jobs
Formwork and shuttering come first. Vertical wall pours on basements, commercial cores, retaining walls, and abutments take the bulk of film-faced volume, usually in 1220×2440 mm kits for US and Canadian gangs or 1250×2500 mm for EU and DACH equipment. Horizontal slab decking sits as the thin top face on timber bearers or a system table; the sheet is not the structural beam. Column and beam forms — square columns strapped to a steel collar, beam soffits and side panels often cut thinner at 9–15 mm — use the same sealed face so strip stays clean.

Grade comparison: glue, bond class, and reuse
Buyers often mix glue, face film, and product name into one word. They are three different things. Core glue sits between veneers. Face film is the overlay paper. Decorative laminate is a furniture surface. Write the layer on the RFQ so the quotation matches the pour programme.
Under EN 636, Class 2 (EN 636-2) covers humid and short outdoor exposure. Class 3 (EN 636-3) is the exterior band that has to survive a boil test. Only PF (phenol-formaldehyde) core glue qualifies a formwork panel for Class 3. High-content MUF (melamine-urea-formaldehyde) clears humid service and stays Class 2 — which is why Form Extra is not Class 3 even when the phenolic face looks the same as a heavier grade.

Pro Form Lite is the mid step many US and Canadian RFQs miss. It shares the same reuse ceiling as Form Extra (up to 15) but uses PF glue and Class 3 writing. Why crews keep specifying film faced plywood
The phenolic face is non-porous and resists the alkaline pH of fresh concrete, so with a light release agent — or none on the first few pours of a fresh sheet — the panel separates without the wood-on-concrete bond that ruins unfaced plywood. Every reuse figure is a maximum, not a guarantee. Realised pour counts track four site variables: release agent quality, edge condition between pours, how panels are stored, and how they are stripped. Form Basic (MUF, EN 636-2) is written up to 10 pours. Form Extra (Superior Glue MUF, EN 636-2) and Pro Form Lite (PF, EN 636-3) sit at up to 15. Pro Form and HDO Premium (both PF, EN 636-3) sit at up to 20 — never stretch the Premium line past twenty pours on the label.
Crowbar stripping at the wrong angle, face-to-face stacks in standing water, or skipped release agent on coloured concrete cut those figures roughly in half. Brush residue after every pour, reseal exposed cuts, and store panels flat under cover, and crews hit the upper bound more often than not.

The number that matters on a forming programme is cost per pour: landed panel cost divided by realised pour count. Sheet price alone misleads. A cheaper MUF panel and a Class 3 phenolic panel can deliver the same cost per pour when the lighter sheet only lasts a handful of cycles, and an unfaced CDX sheet that dies after one or two pours often ends up the expensive option once labour and replacement are counted.
Run the arithmetic with your own numbers. Take the landed cost of one sheet — your quote, your freight, your duty — then divide by the pour count you actually expect on that job, not the catalogue maximum. Compare that figure across grades. Below roughly eight or nine pours, the lighter MUF panel often wins. Above that, Class 3 phenolic usually wins on absolute cost and finish consistency. How to choose the best film faced plywood
Start with bond class. EN 636-2 (MUF core glue) covers short outdoor exposure and most wall-formwork programmes. EN 636-3 (PF core glue) is the line for sustained outdoor exposure, fair-face work, and high-reuse programmes. WBP MUF is water-resistant; it is not Class 3. When you need Class 3 writing but not Pro Form's up-to-20 ceiling, Pro Form Lite is the mid step — same reuse band as Form Extra, PF glue instead of Superior Glue MUF.
Film weight (gsm) comes next. Lighter film covers basic reuse; heavier film extends pour count and smooths the face. HDO paper — including HDO Premium at up to 20 pours — is the step for architectural concrete and high-reuse fair-face programmes. Core species and sheet size close the spec: plantation-grown eucalyptus and acacia give density in the formwork band and solid screw-holding, while poplar cores cut weight and trade stability, which is fine for low-stress work but not for tall wall pours. Match 1220×2440 mm to US, Canadian, UK, and many Asian kits; match 1250×2500 mm to EU and DACH equipment. Standards buyers actually write on RFQs
EN 636 is the EU service-class system. EN 636-1 is dry interior, EN 636-2 is humid interior or short outdoor, and EN 636-3 is full outdoor — that humid-versus-exterior split is exactly what separates Form Extra from Pro Form Lite and Pro Form. APA Plyform is the US Engineered Wood Association classification for concrete forming plywood (Class I, Class II, and Structural I). The three panel types overlap on a spec sheet and separate on application fit. Film faced plywood carries a phenolic film tuned for concrete release and repeated shuttering cycles.
