Shopping for the right panel starts with knowing what each family is built for. These are the kinds you will meet most often.

Softwood plywood

Made from softwoods such as pine, fir, cedar, or spruce, this is the workhorse of construction. It carries roof sheathing, subfloors, and wall sheathing, and it turns up in sheds, shelving, and site hoarding. Softwood plywood is graded for strength rather than looks, so a C or D face is normal.

Hardwood plywood

Built from hardwood veneers such as birch, oak, maple, walnut, or the plantation-grown Acacia and Eucalyptus we peel in Vietnam, hardwood plywood runs seven or more layers for stiffness and a clean face. It is the panel for furniture, cabinet carcasses, wood casings, and anything that needs a durable, paintable or stainable surface.

Aircraft plywood

A high-grade, thin-veneer panel made from birch or mahogany, aircraft plywood is engineered to be light and strong at once. The name is literal: it was developed for airframes, and it still shows up where a very high strength-to-weight ratio matters, such as boat parts and high-load furniture. It is a specialist grade, not a general building board.

Exterior plywood

Exterior plywood is bonded with a water-resistant glue so it holds up to weather and humidity. Good exterior board frames outdoor structures for years. It is not waterproof, and the difference is the glue line rather than the wood, so specify the bond class (WBP or MR) for the exposure you expect.

Lumber core plywood

A three-layer panel with a thick solid-wood core between two hardwood face veneers. The solid core holds screws and nails well, which suits shelving and cabinet work where fixings go into the edge. Match the core quality to the job, since a poor core will not grip fixings the way a good one does.

Marine plywood

Marine plywood is often misread as "waterproof." It is not. What defines it is a void-free hardwood core and a durable water-resistant bond, typically a WBP glue to a BS 1088-style standard, so the panel resists delamination under repeated wetting far better than ordinary board. The absence of core voids is the point: no internal gaps to trap water. It still needs sealing and finishing for full outdoor service. Overlaid plywood (MDO and HDO)

Overlaid plywood carries a resin-impregnated surface bonded under heat and pressure. Medium Density Overlay (MDO) gives a smooth, paintable face; High Density Overlay (HDO) packs more resin for a harder, more abrasion-resistant surface. Both use a water-resistant bond. Structural plywood

Also called sheathing plywood, this is graded for load rather than looks, usually C or D faces with an exterior bond. It frames and sheathes buildings and takes structural loads, so the specification is about bond and strength class, not surface finish. It is a construction panel first.

Plantation-grown hardwood plywood

Much of the plywood exported from Southeast Asia is built on plantation-grown hardwood rather than old-growth timber. Vinawood peels Acacia, Eucalyptus, and Hevea from managed plantations, and the species order by density runs Hevea, then Eucalyptus, then Acacia. Acacia is a mainstream plantation hardwood in its own right, not a lesser stand-in. This is the honest name for what used to be sold loosely as an Asian softwood substitute: a certified, traceable, plantation-sourced panel.

Flexible plywood

Built with a cross-grain core that lets it bend, flexible plywood follows curves for rounded furniture, columns, and shaped interior features. In the UK it earned the nickname "hatters ply" from its Victorian use in stovepipe hats. It trades some rigidity for that bend, so it is a shaping board, not a structural one.

Construction plywood

An umbrella term covering structural and non-structural building panels, from sheathing grades to composite boards. The label says less than the grade stamp, so read the bond class and strength grade rather than the word "construction" alone.

Veneer core plywood

The classic build: an odd number of cross-grained veneers around a central ply. It balances load capacity, screw holding, and a degree of flex, which is why it is the all-round choice for cabinetry and general joinery.

MDF core plywood

Here the core is medium-density fibreboard rather than veneer. It machines cleanly, sits very flat, and takes paint and vinyl well, which suits furniture bases and painted doors. It is heavier than a veneer core and less happy in damp conditions, so keep it to dry interiors.

ApplePly and specialty birch panels

Multi-ply birch-and-alder panels with many thin layers and a fine edge, prized for cabinetry and exposed-edge work. They cut cleanly without tearing. These are a niche, premium furniture grade rather than a construction board.

Exterior sheathing and OSB

For roofing, wall sheathing, and roof decking, engineered panels such as OSB and CDX do the structural job. OSB uses compressed, cross-oriented wood strands and a water-resistant bond. It is an engineered cousin of plywood rather than plywood itself, but it competes for the same sheathing work.

Subfloor plywood

Subfloor panels carry the floor finish, so they need to be stiff enough to span joists and soft enough to take fixings. OSB and CDX are the usual picks, sized to the joist spacing and the finish above.

Sundeala and recycled-fibre boards

Face veneers are graded A, B, C, or D, with A the smoothest and near knot-free and D the roughest with open defects. A and B faces suit visible, paint-ready surfaces; C and D suit hidden structural work. Panels are often labelled by two faces, such as B/C, meaning a better front and a rougher back. An added "X," as in CDX, signals an exterior-capable bond, not a separate grade.

Exposure and bond class

Exposure describes how much moisture the glue line can take. In North American terms that runs Interior, Exposure 1, and Exterior. Under the European standard EN 636 it splits into EN 636-1 (dry), EN 636-2 (humid), and EN 636-3 (exterior). The two bond shorthands worth knowing are MR (moisture resistant, for protected interiors) and WBP (weather and boil proof, for humid and exterior service). Plywood is water-resistant, not waterproof, and the bond class is what carries that rating.

For a buyer, formaldehyde emission class is the fourth spec that separates a compliant panel from a generic one. Look for CARB Phase 2 and EPA TSCA Title VI in the United States, or an E1 rating under EN 13986 in Europe. A note on "melamine" plywood

The word melamine causes more confusion than any other in this trade, because it means three different things. It can be the core glue resin (melamine-urea-formaldehyde, an EN 636-2 bond), a decorative face film pressed onto interior panels, or the pre-printed melamine laminate on cabinet carcasses. When a spec says "melamine," ask which one is meant. The glue-class meaning and the decorative-surface meaning are not interchangeable.

What drives plywood cost

Prices move too fast and vary too much by region to quote here, and a stale number helps no one. What actually drives cost is consistent across markets: the core species and grade, the veneer face quality, the bond class, the overlay if any, the panel thickness, and the certifications the buyer needs. A CARB P2, CE-marked, FSC panel carries documentation that a commodity board does not.
