European Buyers Book Q4 Plywood as Suez Sailings Return
European buyers book Q4 plywood from Vietnam as Suez sailings return: EU imports near 7x in H1; Asia–Europe rates ease, so lock load weeks now.

European plywood buyers are booking Q4 loads from Vietnam into a shipping lane that is getting shorter again. Carriers have been moving Asia–Europe services off the long Cape of Good Hope route and back through the Suez Canal, and industry trackers say that switch is picking up into October. For a buyer in Rotterdam, Antwerp or Genoa, the same order can reach the yard one to two weeks sooner than it would on the Africa routing.
Demand was already moving. ITTO figures show EU imports of hardwood plywood from Vietnam hit 97,100 m³ in the first half of 2026, almost seven times the volume a year earlier, and Vietnam now supplies more than a third of that category. This brief follows our 28 September brief, which looked at US residential pours. This week the story sits on the Europe side of the order book.
Suez is shortening the Europe run
The return is gradual. Major lines have put more sailings through the canal since May, and more Asia–North Europe and Mediterranean services are scheduled to follow later this month and into late October. Some passages still need a security review, so the Red Sea is open for business without yet feeling routine.
Shorter voyages also free up ships, because each loop needs fewer vessels to keep a weekly call. That extra space is part of why Asia–Europe rates have been easing.
Rates are softer, but carriers want them back up
Drewry's index put Shanghai–Rotterdam near $3,400 and Shanghai–Genoa near $3,700 per 40ft container on 1 October, still easing week on week. Treat those Shanghai figures as direction, not as the price of a container leaving northern Vietnam. A Hai Phong load usually prices on its own carrier quote, and many sailings still relay through a Southeast Asian hub before the long leg west. What the numbers do tell a purchasing manager is that space on the Europe trade is easier to find this month than it was in July.
A cancelled sailing means the carrier drops a scheduled voyage; it does not mean a ship leaving empty. Carriers have also announced plans for higher general cargo tariffs in the second half of October, after China's Golden Week. From our desk in northern Vietnam, we would book the Q4 Europe load week now and ask the forwarder which routing that vessel takes, rather than wait for a deeper dip that lines are already working to reverse.
Hai Phong keeps loading through October
China's factories shut for Golden Week in early October, which thins cargo on both East–West trades. Vietnam's National Day falls in early September, so October is a normal working month for northern Vietnamese mills and for Hai Phong. The port keeps taking Asia–Europe sailings while Chinese terminals pause.
Reliability still decides a lot of outcomes. Global on-time performance has been weak this year, and late ships can arrive nearly a week behind schedule. When two quotes are close, the carrier with the better on-time record is usually worth the difference.
Weather is a small factor this week. A cold front reached Hai Phong with rough seas in the Gulf of Tonkin, and central Vietnam has seen heavy rain. Neither is a typhoon, but wet weeks slow veneer drying, so leave a little margin on mill dates for October production.
What European buyers are ordering
Europe's building market is not the reason imports jumped almost sevenfold. The rise reflects a change in where European importers source, not a construction boom. Distributors are shifting volume to new origins and want panels that fit what their customers already use.
For most European formwork yards that means film-faced panels in the 1250 × 2500 mm European size. Form Basic, Form Extra and Eco Form use melamine (MUF) core glue in the moisture-resistant EN 636-2 class, the usual pick for covered formwork. Pro Form is the phenolic Class 3 (EN 636-3) choice for exterior work and long wet storage on site. The EU Deforestation Regulation applies from the end of December 2026, and importers will favour suppliers who can document where the wood came from. Our page on how Vinawood prepares EUDR evidence sets out what arrives with each order.
Currency and the US coast check
Most Vietnamese mill contracts invoice FOB in dollars, so a euro buyer should write currency on its own line next to ocean freight. Dollar and euro moves this week were modest; the point is to track them next to the freight line, not bury them in the panel price.
US-bound buyers have a different picture. Drewry's 1 October Shanghai floors put Los Angeles at $7,835 and New York at $10,428 per 40ft. For planning, a 40ft high-cube container from Hai Phong to the US West Coast sits at or above $7,835, and to the US East Coast at or above $10,428.
What to do this week
Lock Q4 Europe orders against the vessel week, not just the mill week. Ask for the routing in writing. Suez and Cape sailings can differ by more than a week, and both are running this month. Budget freight close to today's levels instead of planning for a further slide, because carriers already have increases on the table for late October.
Capacity is there. The buyers who book load weeks and routing together this month are the ones whose panels land first.
