Painted plywood lasts longer and looks cleaner than raw sheet — if you prep it. Skip prep and you chase peel. This walk-through is the shop sequence we recommend: clean, fill, sand, prime, coat, seal when the job needs it.
Can I paint directly onto wood?
You can. Results usually look blotchy. Plywood drinks paint unevenly. Grain telegraphing, dry spots, early peel — all common when you skip sanding and primer. Some rustic projects want that show-through. Most furniture and trim jobs do not. Ten minutes of prep beats a weekend of sanding paint later.
How to paint plywood
Order matters more than brand of paint. Work the steps below in sequence. Rush one and the next coat shows it.

Clean the plywood surface.
Dust and grease kill adhesion. Wipe with a damp cloth. Greasy shop sheets get mild detergent, then a clean rinse and full dry. Paint over sawdust and you sand forever later.
Apply wood filler for corrections.
Fill voids, screw holes, and edge chips. Putty knife, thin coats, dry fully. Overfill a little — you will sand it flush. Bare plywood edges drink filler; that is normal.

Sand the surface.
120–150 grit after filler. Knock down raised grain and filler ridges. Vacuum or wipe dust. Skip this and primer sits on fluff.
Apply primer.
Wood primer first. Thin coat, full coverage, dry per the can. Primer locks the face so paint does not sink in stripes. Exterior jobs: use an exterior-rated primer.
Paint the plywood.
Latex or acrylic for most indoor work. Brush or roller. Two or three thin coats beat one heavy coat that sags. Dry between coats. Edges get an extra pass — they drink paint.

Add a sealant if needed.
Wet rooms, shop benches, exterior trim — clear sealant after the paint cures helps. Indoor closet shelves? Paint alone is often enough.
What kind of paint do you use on plywood?
Indoor: water-based latex or acrylic. Fast dry, soap-and-water cleanup, decent toughness. Outdoor: oil-based or a quality exterior acrylic built for weather. Oil lasts in rain; it also smells and needs solvent cleanup. Match the paint system to where the panel lives.
Is it OK to paint plywood without primer?
Possible. Not smart for a finish you care about. Without primer, paint sinks into soft earlywood and sits on latewood. Blotches. More coats. Earlier peel in humid rooms. Primer is cheap insurance.
Should I paint or spray paint plywood?
Spray wins on large flat faces — fewer brush marks, faster coverage, better on edges if you keep the gun moving. Brush or roller wins on small parts, touch-ups, and shops without spray gear. Overspray wastes paint outdoors on a windy day. Pick the tool for the panel size, not for Instagram.

Is acrylic paint good for plywood?
Yes for interiors. Dries quick. Levels well. Cleanup is water. Less yellowing than old oil alkyds on pale faces. Low odor helps in closed rooms. For heavy exterior weather, check the label — some acrylics are interior-only.

Is plywood waterproof if painted?
No. Paint adds water resistance. It does not make commodity plywood waterproof. Pinholes, thin edges, and end grain still take water. Exterior paint plus primer plus a clear topcoat helps. Standing water or buried edges still fail. For real wet service, start with the right panel (exterior or marine bond), then finish it — do not expect paint alone to save an interior sheet outdoors.
Should you seal plywood before painting?
Primer or a dedicated sealer first. Porous faces drink paint. Sealing flattens absorption so color stays even and you burn fewer topcoats. Skipping seal on cheap sanded pine plywood is how people get tiger stripes.
Does plywood warp when painted?
It can, if you coat one face and leave the back raw. Moisture moves through the open face and the sheet cups. Seal both faces when the panel can move freely. Acclimate sheets in the room before finishing. Outdoor stacks without stickers warp before you even open the paint can.
Why is paint not sticking to wood?
Dirty surface. Wet wood. Glossy old finish not sanded. No primer on a porous face. Wrong paint for the substrate. Cold garage below the can’s temperature range. Fix the cause — do not just add thicker coats.
