Film faced plywood is a hardwood-core panel with a phenolic-resin film hot-pressed onto both faces. Contractors use it as a reusable casting surface for poured concrete. Film weight (often written as gsm, grams per square metre) and bond class decide how many pours you get back. What film faced plywood is
Three parts make the sandwich. A cross-laminated hardwood plywood core, usually plantation-grown eucalyptus or acacia, glued with a water-resistant WBP adhesive at every glue line. A phenolic-resin film on kraft paper, pressed onto both faces under heat. Sealed edges, painted or banded, so cut ends do not drink water between pours.
The film is thin. It gives the dark brown gloss, the concrete-release behaviour, and weather resistance on the face. The plywood stack carries the load. Once the press cycle finishes, film and core act as one panel.
Film faced plywood is not the same product as MDO (medium-density overlay) or HDO (high-density overlay). Overlay weight and resin density set the difference. MDO uses a lighter kraft overlay tuned for paint adhesion. HDO uses a heavier phenolic kraft paper aimed at high reuse and fair-face concrete. More on that split further down.
Types of film faced plywood
Buyers mix glue, face film, and product name into one word. They are three different things. Core glue sits between veneers. Face film is the overlay paper. Decorative laminate is a furniture surface. Do not write "melamine panel" on an RFQ and expect the mill to guess which layer you meant.
Bond class is the written claim that the glue line will hold in wet service. Under EN 636, the European plywood specification, Class 2 (EN 636-2) covers humid and short outdoor exposure. Class 3 (EN 636-3) is the exterior band that has to survive a boil test. Only PF (phenol-formaldehyde) core glue qualifies a formwork panel for Class 3. High-content MUF (melamine-urea-formaldehyde) clears humid service and stays Class 2.

Pro Form Lite is the grade this page used to miss. Same reuse ceiling as Form Extra (up to 15). Different glue. Lite is PF and Class 3. Extra is Superior Glue MUF and stays EN 636-2. Spec a Class 3 line when the tender asks for it. Spec Extra when humid-service MUF is enough and you want that reuse band without jumping to Pro Form's heavier programme.
P-Form is polypropylene-faced. It is a different panel from Pro Form. Never write them as if they were the same product. Consply is commercial Bintangor. Anti-slip wire-mesh or hex-pattern faces exist inside the same glue ladder. They change grip on scaffolding decks. They do not change bond class.
Why film faced plywood is used in formwork
Five site reasons keep the panel on commercial and infrastructure jobs.
Clean concrete release. The phenolic face is non-porous and resists the alkaline pH of fresh concrete. With a light release agent (or none on the first few pours of a fresh sheet), the panel separates without the wood-on-concrete bond that ruins unfaced plywood.
Fair-face finish. A clean film on a properly tensioned form delivers a smooth, light grey surface with crisp panel-edge imprints. Architectural pours that need the concrete as the finish usually step up to heavier phenolic film or HDO.
Reuse economics. Up to 20 pours on a Pro Form panel, up to 30 on HDO, turns the sheet from a consumable into a tool. Cost per pour, not sheet price, is the number that decides the spend.
Edge sealing. Painted or banded edges stop water uptake at cut ends. An unsealed edge swells inside two pours. A sealed edge sees a full reuse cycle.
Stability under wet concrete pressure. Cross-laminated WBP plywood holds lateral pressure on tall wall pours without bowing the way solid wood or unfaced softwood sheets do after one or two cycles.
Film faced plywood uses

Wall formwork. Vertical pours on basements, commercial cores, retaining walls, abutments. Panel sizes 1220×2440 mm and 1250×2500 mm dominate.
Slab formwork (decking). Horizontal slabs on multi-storey buildings. The film-faced sheet is the thin top decking on timber bearers or a system table. It is not the structural beam.
Column formwork. Square and rectangular columns, usually strapped or clamped to a steel collar.
Beam formwork. Beam soffits and side panels, often thinner sheets (9–15 mm) shaped to the profile.
Foundations and mats. Edge formwork on large mat pours. The panel takes lateral pressure from a deep lift of fresh concrete.
Stairs and special shapes. Cut sheets for stair flights and awkward returns where a system form does not fit.
Scaffolding decks. Anti-slip film variants on access platforms where grip matters more than a glass-smooth face.
Lost (sacrificial) formwork. Panels that stay cast into the structure. A lower bond class and lighter film are acceptable because the sheet sees one pour.

Reuse cycles — what "up to N pours" actually means
Every reuse figure is a maximum. Not a guarantee. Realised pour counts track four site variables: release agent quality, edge condition between pours, how panels are stored, and how they are stripped.
Typical ceilings under good site discipline:
- Form Basic (MUF, EN 636-2) — up to 10 pours
- Form Extra (Superior Glue MUF, EN 636-2) — up to 15 pours
- Pro Form Lite (PF, EN 636-3) — up to 15 pours
- Pro Form (PF, EN 636-3) — up to 20 pours
- HDO (PF, EN 636-3) — up to 30 pours
Crowbar stripping at the wrong angle, face-to-face stacks in standing water, or skipped release agent on coloured concrete cut those figures roughly in half. Brush residue after every pour, reseal exposed cuts, and store panels flat under cover, and crews hit the upper bound more often than not.
I have watched the same Pro Form batch clear near 20 pours on a disciplined commercial core and struggle past 12 once it moved through three subcontractors on a housing block. We track realised reuse from our own EU and South-East Asian deliveries for that reason. The label never outruns the handling.
Cost-per-pour economics
The number that matters on a forming programme is cost per pour: landed panel cost divided by realised pour count. Sheet price alone misleads. A cheaper MUF panel and a Class 3 phenolic panel can deliver the same cost per pour. An unfaced CDX sheet that dies after one or two pours often ends up the expensive option.
Run the arithmetic with your own numbers:
- Take the landed cost of one sheet (your quote, your freight, your duty).
- Divide by the pour count you actually expect on that job, not the catalogue maximum.
- Compare that figure across grades. Below roughly eight or nine pours, the lighter MUF panel often wins. Above that, Class 3 phenolic usually wins on absolute cost and finish consistency.

How to choose the best film faced plywood
Narrow the decision to panel selection for the pour programme in front of you.
Bond class. EN 636-2 (MUF core glue) covers short outdoor exposure and most wall-formwork programmes. EN 636-3 (PF core glue) is the line for sustained outdoor exposure, fair-face work, and high-reuse programmes. WBP MUF is water-resistant. It is not Class 3.
Where Lite sits. Need Class 3 writing but not Pro Form's up-to-20 ceiling? Pro Form Lite is the mid step. Same reuse band as Form Extra, PF glue instead of Superior Glue MUF.
Film weight (gsm). Lighter film covers basic reuse. Heavier film extends pour count and smooths the face. HDO paper is the step for architectural concrete and programmes past 25 pours.
Core species. Plantation-grown eucalyptus and acacia give density in the formwork band and solid screw-holding. Poplar cores cut weight and trade stability. Fine for low-stress work. Not for tall wall pours.
Sheet size. 1220×2440 mm matches US, UK, and many Asian site kits. 1250×2500 mm matches EU and DACH equipment. Match the format to the walers and props already on site.
Edge sealing. Factory-painted edges pay back across the full reuse cycle. Unsealed edges swell regardless of face film quality.
Standards: EN 636, APA Plyform, BS 1088, BIS IS 4990
Four regional standards govern film faced plywood. Each tests the same material against local performance criteria.
EN 636 (EU). Service-class system. EN 636-1 is dry interior. EN 636-2 is humid interior or short outdoor. EN 636-3 is full outdoor. That humid-versus-exterior split is exactly what separates Form Extra from Pro Form Lite and Pro Form. EN 13986 adds CE marking and a Declaration of Performance for panels placed on the EU market.
APA Plyform (US). APA Engineered Wood Association classification for concrete forming plywood. Class I, Class II, and Structural I. HDO and MDO panels sit inside this system on US jobs.
BS 1088 (UK). British marine plywood standard, still referenced on some UK formwork tenders. Functions as a high-bar phenolic-adhesive reference even though it is a marine document.
BIS IS 4990 (India). Indian Standard for plywood for concrete shuttering. Defines the BWP-grade equivalent for forming. Deeper standards mapping sits in the formwork plywood grades reference.
Formwork panels and PS-structural plywood are excluded from the Vietnam hardwood CVD order. That exclusion is about product class, not a blanket duty-free claim on every Vietnam plywood shipment.
Film faced plywood vs MDO vs HDO
The three panel types overlap on a spec sheet. They separate on application fit. MDO stays in the comparison because buyers still search that token. The Vinawood product name for the paint-grade overlay line is MatteFace Plywood (MTF). MDO is the search and bridge term.

Where to source film faced plywood
Buyers usually arrive through one of three channels.
Manufacturer-direct at container volume. Factory quotes for importers and distributors who take a full container. You specify grade, thickness, size, film gsm, and bond class on the RFQ.
Appointed distribution. North American distribution for Vinawood runs through Oneply as appointed partner. That is a channel, not a second factory.
Trade and project supply. Local merchants and formwork hire fleets stock standard sizes for smaller lifts. Useful when you need sheets next week, not next month.
