Prospects of Vietnam’s plywood exporting in 2021

Currently, there are about 72 countries and territories consuming Vietnam plywood, but plywood exporters mainly concentrated in 5 countries including: Korea, USA, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand. These five countries together account for over 84% of the total export volume and turnover of plywood from Vietnam in 2020 to all markets.

Next, Vietnam exported 231,710 cubic meter to Malaysia, bringing in $62.81 million in 2020; 29% increase in volume and 21% in value compared to 2019; accounting for 11% of total plywood exports. The Japanese market occupies the 4th place, with 170,200 cubic meter of plywood and brought Vietnam a turnover of 43.24 million USD from this country; an increase of 5% in volume and 2% in value compared to 2019; accounting for 8% of Vietnam’s total plywood exports. In 2020, Thailand imported 144,440 cubic meter of Vietnam, reaching 42.92 million USD; increased 33% in volume and 32% in value compared to 2019, accounting for 7% of our country’s total plywood exports.

China is still the world’s leading plywood supplier, accounting for over 30% of the global market share in both volume and value. In 2019, China’s export turnover of this item reached 4.5 billion USD, equivalent to over 5.4 million cubic meter. In 2020, both the volume and value of China’s export of this item to the world decreased by 10% compared to the previous year, reaching nearly 5 million cubic meter. Indonesia is the country that provides plywood in second place, with a turnover of 1.7 billion USD in 2019, accounting for 11% of the world market share. In 2020, Indonesia’s plywood export turnover decreased by 5% compared to 2019. Russia’s plywood exports reached 1.14 billion USD, accounting for 8% of the world market share in 2020. However, the value of the metal Russia’s export turnover of this item decreased by about 5% compared to the previous year. Malaysia’s plywood exports reached $821.78 million in 2019, accounting for about 6% of the world market share. In 2020, Malaysia’s plywood export turnover decreased by 14% compared to 2019.
